A detailed 1854 etching by George Cruikshank, serving as the frontispiece for his illustrated edition of the classic fairy tale, Cinderella.
This etching by George Cruikshank serves as the frontispiece for his 1854 publication of Cinderella and the Glass Slipper. Cruikshank, a prolific British caricaturist and illustrator, was well known for his work with Charles Dickens and his mastery of the etching needle. In this composition, he frames the narrative within an architectural structure that resembles a proscenium arch, complete with grotesque masks carved into the pillars.
The central scene depicts Cinderella seated by a hearth, while a small, cloaked figure, presumably the fairy godmother, sits opposite her. A large cauldron hangs over the fire, creating a sense of domestic magic. Above the arch, Cruikshank incorporates thematic elements from the tale, including a clock nearing midnight and a pumpkin topped with a crown. The attention to detail is characteristic of his style, where every corner of the frame is filled with narrative clues and decorative flourishes.
Cruikshank's line work is precise and controlled, demonstrating the technical skill required for Victorian-era book illustration. The contrast between the dark, smoky hearth and the lighter architectural frame draws the eye toward the interaction between the two figures. This piece reflects the Victorian fascination with fairy tales and the era's penchant for highly detailed, narrative-driven visual art. The inclusion of the title within the frame itself integrates typography with the image, a common practice in nineteenth-century publishing. This print offers a glimpse into the collaborative process between author and illustrator during a period when the visual presentation of literature was of great importance to the reading public.
