A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikazu, depicting a French woman and child in the distinctive style of the mid-nineteenth century.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikazu belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a category of ukiyo-e that emerged following the opening of the port of Yokohama to foreign trade in 1859. During this period, Japanese artists sought to document the appearance, customs, and technology of the foreigners who arrived in their country. These works provided the Japanese public with a visual record of people from distant nations, often blending accurate observation with stylistic conventions of the Edo period.
The print depicts a French woman holding a child, rendered with the characteristic flat planes and bold outlines of the ukiyo-e tradition. The woman wears a voluminous skirt, a fashion silhouette that fascinated Japanese observers of Western dress. Her attire is simplified into large blocks of colour, with the green bodice and muted skirt contrasting against the child's red garment. The artist employs a limited palette, typical of the woodblock printing process of the time, to create a clear and legible image.
Utagawa Yoshikazu was a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and became one of the most prolific contributors to the Yokohama-e style. His work captures a moment of cultural curiosity, where the unfamiliar is translated into the visual language of the Japanese printmaker. The composition is straightforward, focusing on the figures against a plain background, which allows the viewer to concentrate on the details of the clothing and the interaction between the mother and child. This print serves as a historical document of the early encounters between Japan and the West, reflecting the fascination with the exotic that defined the mid-nineteenth century in Japan.
