A woodblock print from the Yokohama-e genre depicting Westerners in a domestic setting, capturing the cultural curiosity of mid-nineteenth-century Japan.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikazu belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a category of ukiyo-e produced during the Bakumatsu and early Meiji periods. These works documented the arrival of Westerners in the port of Yokohama following the opening of Japan to international trade. The print depicts a domestic interior where two men and a woman, dressed in Western attire, gather around a circular table.
The composition reflects the Japanese fascination with foreign customs, technology, and fashion during this era. The artist includes specific details such as the oil lamp, the glassware, and the Western-style furniture to convey the novelty of these visitors. The figures are rendered with the characteristic stylisation of the Utagawa school, blending traditional Japanese print techniques with an attempt to capture the unfamiliar appearance of foreigners. The woman pours a drink while the men sit, creating a scene of social interaction that would have appeared exotic to the contemporary Japanese viewer.
Technically, the print employs the flat colour planes and strong outlines typical of mid-nineteenth-century woodblock production. The palette is restrained, relying on muted tones to define the interior space and the clothing of the subjects. The inclusion of a bookshelf and a window with curtains further emphasises the attempt to recreate a Western domestic setting. This work provides a record of the cultural exchange and curiosity that defined the period, offering a glimpse into how Japanese artists interpreted the sudden influx of foreign influence. It remains a document of the social observation that occurred as Japan transitioned into a new era of global engagement.
