A satirical woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshifuji depicting five figures from different nations in an interlocking, acrobatic formation.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshifuji, dating to the early 1860s, belongs to a genre of satirical imagery known as giga. The composition features five figures arranged in a circular, interlocking formation, creating a visual puzzle where limbs and torsos merge. Each figure represents a different nationality, identified by small cartouches: a Russian, an American, an Englishman, a Frenchman, and a Chinese person. The artist employs a playful, distorted perspective to suggest a chaotic, acrobatic energy.
Yoshifuji, a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, often produced works that commented on the influx of foreigners into Japan during the Bakumatsu period. The figures wear Western-style military or civilian attire, rendered with the bold outlines and flat colour application typical of the period. The yellow background provides a neutral field, allowing the red, blue, and black garments of the figures to remain distinct. The print functions as a visual pun, playing on the idea of cooperation or perhaps the perceived absurdity of international relations at the time. The figures are depicted in various states of motion, some holding items such as a horn, an umbrella, or a walking stick. This work captures a specific moment in Japanese art history, where traditional printmaking techniques met the social anxieties of a country opening its borders. The print is a fine example of how artists used humour and caricature to process complex geopolitical shifts, presenting them through the accessible medium of the woodblock print.
