Descrizione
A study of a Provençal field, captured with thick, rhythmic brushwork and a contrast between deep greens and bright red poppies.
Painted in 1889, this work captures the rural surroundings of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Van Gogh utilised his characteristic impasto technique, applying paint in thick, rhythmic strokes that define the texture of the vegetation. The composition is divided into distinct zones: the foreground features dense, dark shrubbery, while the mid-ground transitions into cultivated rows of crops punctuated by the bright red of poppies. A small, yellow-walled building sits to the right, providing a geometric contrast to the organic forms of the fields.
The colour palette relies on the tension between the deep, cool greens of the foliage and the warm, scattered reds of the flowers. Van Gogh observed these fields from the window of his studio at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum. His approach to the subject is direct, focusing on the physical presence of the earth and the growth of the plants. The elevated perspective flattens the space, drawing the eye across the surface of the canvas rather than into a distant horizon. This method allows the viewer to focus on the individual brushwork and the energy contained within each mark.
This painting reflects the artist's focus on the natural world during his time in the south of France. By avoiding smooth blending, he maintained the raw quality of the paint, which conveys the movement of the air and the density of the growth. The work remains a clear example of his mature style, where colour and texture function as the primary means of expression. It is a study of light and form, rendered with a sense of urgency and precision that defines his output from this period.

Field with Poppies - Vincent van Gogh
Artist Biography
Vincent Van Gogh
He taught himself to draw by copying prints and working through textbooks. His brother Theo, an art dealer in Paris, sent money every month for the rest of Vincent's life. Without Theo there are no paintings. The letters between them, over 600, are one of the most complete records of any artist's thinking. Van Gogh wrote about colour theory, composition, what he ate, what he read, how much he spent on paint. He was articulate and well-read and not, despite the popular version, simply mad.
He moved to Paris in 1886 and encountered Impressionism. The palette changed immediately: from the dark browns of his Dutch period to the colours people actually associate with his work. He met Gauguin, Pissarro, Signac, Toulouse-Lautrec. He absorbed Pointillism and Japanese prints. Then he moved to Arles in the south of France, where the light was better and people were fewer.
The Arles period produced Sunflowers, The Bedroom, Starry Night Over the Rhone. The breakdown followed: the argument with Gauguin, the severed ear (he cut part of his left ear, not the whole thing), the asylum at Saint-Remy, and then Auvers-sur-Oise, where he painted seventy canvases in seventy days before dying from a gunshot wound at thirty-seven. He sold one painting during his lifetime, or possibly two. Theo died six months later.
