A delicate sanguine study by Théophile Steinlen, capturing a quiet, intimate moment of a woman tending to her nails.
Théophile Steinlen, a Swiss-born artist who spent his career in the Montmartre district of Paris, is widely recognised for his depictions of everyday life. While he is often associated with his posters and illustrations for cabaret venues, his body of work includes numerous figure studies that demonstrate his technical proficiency with dry media. This particular work, executed in sanguine, captures a quiet, private moment of a woman tending to her nails.
The composition is minimalist, focusing entirely on the figure. Steinlen uses the warm, earthy tones of the red chalk to model the form, relying on subtle gradations of pressure to suggest volume and shadow. The woman is depicted in a seated, hunched posture, her head tilted downwards to concentrate on her task. This pose creates a sense of intimacy and domestic stillness, far removed from the public spectacles of the Parisian nightlife he frequently documented.
Steinlen’s approach to the human form here is grounded in observation. He avoids idealisation, choosing instead to render the natural weight and posture of the body. The lines are fluid, showing the confidence of an artist accustomed to rapid sketching. By stripping away background detail, Steinlen directs the viewer to the physical presence of the subject. The use of sanguine, a medium favoured by Old Masters for its ability to mimic the warmth of human skin, adds a tactile quality to the drawing. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's private practice, where he explored the human condition through simple, unadorned gestures. It remains a fine example of his ability to find grace in the mundane activities of his contemporaries.
