Descrizione
A square-format oil painting by Gustav Klimt, depicting a dense, flat arrangement of sunflowers and garden flowers in the Austrian countryside.
Gustav Klimt painted Farm Garden with Sunflowers in 1907 during a period when he spent his summers at the Attersee in the Austrian countryside. This work represents a departure from his better-known figurative and gold-leaf compositions. Instead, Klimt turns his attention to the natural world, applying a square format that flattens the pictorial space.
The canvas is densely packed with a variety of flora. Sunflowers dominate the upper section, their yellow heads contrasting against the dark, verdant foliage. Below them, a multitude of smaller blooms in red, blue, and white create a textured surface. Klimt avoids traditional perspective, choosing to arrange the flowers in a manner that suggests a continuous, repeating pattern. This approach reflects his interest in decorative arts and the influence of textile design on his aesthetic.
The brushwork is varied, ranging from small, distinct dabs of paint for the smaller flowers to broader strokes for the large sunflower leaves. The lack of a horizon line or sky forces the viewer to focus entirely on the surface of the garden. This technique creates a sense of immersion, as if the viewer is standing directly before the flower bed. The colour palette is dominated by deep greens and earthy tones, punctuated by the bright yellow of the sunflowers and the scattered reds of poppies or similar blossoms. This work demonstrates Klimt's ability to apply his decorative sensibilities to natural subjects, resulting in a composition that feels both structured and organic.

Farm Garden with Sunflowers - Gustav Klimt
Artist Biography
Gustav Klimt
Klimt’s most iconic works, including The Kiss, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, and The Tree of Life, exemplify his unique approach to the human form, celebrating beauty, femininity, and eroticism with bold lines and richly layered textures. His so-called "Golden Phase," marked by the use of gold and silver leaf, was heavily inspired by Byzantine mosaics he saw in Ravenna. During this time, Klimt created some of his most celebrated masterpieces, blending fine art with decorative elements in ways that challenged the conventions of both.
Beyond his visual style, Klimt’s influence extended into the broader currents of European art and design. As a mentor and collaborator, he supported younger artists such as Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, and contributed to the rise of modernism in Austria. His work continues to resonate today for its emotional depth, sensuality, and fusion of fine art with decorative tradition. Klimt’s legacy is felt not only in painting but in fashion, interior design, and contemporary visual culture around the world.
