A detailed nineteenth-century engraving by Edward Goodall, depicting a quiet pastoral scene at dusk with figures and livestock.
Edward Goodall, a British engraver known for his technical precision, produced this work as a study in pastoral atmosphere. The composition follows the conventions of the period, featuring a rural scene at the close of day. A rider on horseback, accompanied by a woman and a small group of livestock, occupies the foreground. The figures are positioned beneath the boughs of a large tree, which frames the right side of the image.
In the distance, the terrain opens into a valley with a small structure visible near the base of the hills. The sky is rendered with soft gradations of tone, suggesting the fading light of dusk. Goodall employs fine lines and cross-hatching to define the textures of the foliage, the animals, and the clothing of the figures. The contrast between the shadowed foreground and the lighter, more atmospheric background creates a sense of depth typical of nineteenth-century printmaking.
This print reflects the interest in idealised rural life that permeated British art during the early nineteenth century. The scene avoids the industrialisation of the era, opting instead for a quiet, agrarian narrative. The inclusion of dogs, cattle, and a horse suggests a moment of transit or rest during a journey. The work demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship required in the production of fine engravings, where every mark contributes to the overall tonal balance. The print remains a clear example of the period's preference for balanced, harmonious compositions that evoke a sense of calm and order.
