A 1775 aquatint by Paul Sandby depicting the ruins of the Episcopal Palace at St. David's, Wales, rendered in fine sepia tones.
This aquatint, published in 1775, captures the ruins of the Episcopal Palace at St. David's in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Paul Sandby, often described as the father of the English watercolour school, utilised the aquatint process to replicate the tonal qualities of his original drawings. The composition presents the medieval structure in a state of picturesque decay, with the crumbling stone walls and arched windows set against a soft, atmospheric sky.
In the foreground, two figures on horseback traverse the open ground, providing a sense of scale to the massive architecture. The use of sepia tones creates a unified, monochromatic aesthetic that emphasises the texture of the masonry and the surrounding foliage. Sandby was instrumental in popularising the depiction of British antiquities, and this print reflects the eighteenth-century fascination with historical sites and the aesthetic of the ruin. The work is part of a broader effort to document the architectural heritage of Britain, blending topographical accuracy with a refined sense of composition. The print includes the original publication details at the base, noting its release by John Boydell in Cheapside. The delicate line work and controlled washes demonstrate the technical precision Sandby brought to the medium of printmaking, allowing for subtle gradations of light and shadow that define the form of the palace ruins.
