A 1950 abstract oil painting by Francis Picabia, featuring bold orange circles against a dark, textured background.
Painted in 1950, Encirclement represents the later period of Francis Picabia, a time when the artist moved away from his earlier Dadaist and Surrealist associations toward a stark, minimalist abstraction. The composition is reduced to its most basic elements: three circular forms set against a dark, rectangular field, which is itself suspended within a deep blue ground. The paint application is tactile and direct, showing the physical movement of the brush across the surface.
Picabia, who spent his career shifting between styles, here focuses on the relationship between colour and geometric form. The contrast between the luminous orange circles and the surrounding black and blue fields creates a sense of spatial tension. The work avoids representational imagery, instead inviting the viewer to consider the interaction of light and shadow through pure colour. The texture of the paint, particularly around the edges of the circles, suggests a deliberate, almost raw approach to the canvas.
This piece reflects the artist's interest in stripping away narrative content. By 1950, Picabia had returned to France after years of travel and exile. His work from this decade often features simplified shapes and a reduced palette, moving toward a form of abstraction that predates later minimalist movements. The signature at the bottom, rendered in a similar orange hue to the circles, integrates the artist's identity into the composition itself. This print captures the heavy impasto and the specific chromatic intensity of the original oil painting, offering a clear view of Picabia's late-career aesthetic choices.
