A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshimori depicting a Western woman with an exotic leopard, dating to the mid-nineteenth century.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshimori belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a category of ukiyo-e that emerged following the opening of the port of Yokohama to foreign trade in 1859. These prints documented the appearance and customs of foreigners, who were often viewed with curiosity by the Japanese public. Yoshimori, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, produced this image as part of the series Pictures of Birds and Animals (Chōjū zue).
The composition depicts a woman in Western-style dress, holding a small bird, standing beside a large, snarling leopard. The artist uses a flattened perspective typical of the period, with the leopard occupying the left side of the frame and the woman positioned to the right. The leopard is rendered with bold, dark spots against a golden-yellow background, while the woman wears a gown featuring a gradient from pink to blue. The inclusion of exotic animals alongside foreign figures was a common trope in Yokohama-e, intended to convey the strange and unfamiliar nature of the outside world to a domestic audience.
Technically, the print displays the characteristic clean lines and flat colour application of the mid-nineteenth-century Japanese woodblock tradition. The artist employs a limited palette, relying on the contrast between the warm yellow ground and the cooler tones of the woman's attire. The leopard's posture, with its tail raised and mouth open, adds a sense of movement to the otherwise static arrangement. This work provides a window into the cultural exchange and visual documentation that defined the early Meiji period, capturing the fascination with foreign subjects that permeated Japanese art during this era of rapid social change.
