A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikazu, depicting Western visitors in Japan during the late Edo period.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikazu belongs to the Yokohama-e genre, a specific category of ukiyo-e that emerged during the late Edo period. Following the opening of the port of Yokohama to foreign trade in 1859, Japanese artists produced these prints to satisfy public curiosity regarding the appearance, customs, and technology of Western visitors.
The composition presents a pair of figures identified as Dutch, accompanied by a dog. The artist employs the characteristic flat perspective and bold outlines typical of the period. The figures are rendered with a degree of caricature, reflecting the limited direct contact between Japanese artists and the foreigners they depicted. The man on the left wears a military-style uniform with gold epaulettes, while the figure on the right is dressed in civilian attire, complete with a pipe and a walking stick.
Textual elements are integrated into the design, providing descriptive information about the subjects and their perceived origins. These inscriptions were common in Yokohama-e, serving as a form of reportage for a Japanese audience unfamiliar with Western dress and habits. The colour palette is restrained, relying on traditional woodblock pigments to define the clothing and the figures against a neutral background. This print serves as a historical record of the cultural encounter between Japan and the West during the Bakumatsu period, capturing the fascination with the exotic other that defined the era's visual culture.
