A character study by Frans Hals, this seventeenth-century panel depicts a young boy representing the sense of Taste through loose, expressive brushwork.
Frans Hals, a master of the Dutch Golden Age, produced this small-scale work as part of a series representing the Five Senses. This specific panel depicts the sense of Taste. The subject is a young boy, captured in a moment of consumption, holding a glass of wine. Hals employs his characteristic loose brushwork, which allows the viewer to observe the speed and confidence of his application. The paint is applied with a fluidity that suggests the texture of the boy's hair and the crisp, pleated ruff around his neck.
The composition is circular, a format often used for allegorical series during the seventeenth century. Despite the allegorical theme, the treatment is grounded in the observation of everyday life. Hals avoids the rigid formality of his contemporaries, opting instead for a spontaneous, lively depiction. The light catches the glass, creating a sense of transparency and weight, while the boy's expression remains focused on the act of drinking. His palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones and subtle variations in light to define the form against a neutral background.
This work demonstrates the artist's ability to convey character through minimal detail. The focus remains on the immediacy of the gesture rather than a polished, academic finish. By choosing a child as the embodiment of taste, Hals adds a layer of playfulness to the traditional allegorical subject. The painting remains a clear example of the genre painting style that defined the Haarlem school. It provides insight into the domestic interests and artistic priorities of the period, where the mundane activities of daily life were elevated to subjects worthy of serious artistic attention. The work is currently held in the collection of the National Gallery in London.

Drinking Boy (Taste) - Frans Hals
Artist Biography
Frans Hals
What set Hals apart was his revolutionary technique. He abandoned the meticulous detail favoured by many of his contemporaries, opting instead for a more spontaneous, almost impressionistic style. His contemporaries marvelled at his ability to capture a likeness with just a few strokes of the brush. This bravura approach not only enlivened his portraits but also hinted at the inner character of his sitters, from wealthy merchants to jovial tavern patrons.
Hals's influence on later generations of artists is undeniable. Masters like Manet and Van Gogh revered his work, recognising in it a kindred spirit. Today, Frans Hals remains celebrated for his groundbreaking approach to portraiture, his ability to breathe life into paint, and his pivotal role in shaping the Dutch Baroque. Owning a print of his work is not just acquiring an image, but capturing a moment of pure, unadulterated life.
