Descrizione
A dynamic cityscape by Oskar Kokoschka, capturing the Dresden Neustadt with expressive brushwork and a bold, saturated colour palette.
Oskar Kokoschka painted this view of Dresden Neustadt during his tenure at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. The work captures the city from a high vantage point, looking across the Elbe River towards the northern bank. Kokoschka employs a gestural application of paint, where thick, visible brushstrokes define the architectural forms and the turbulent surface of the water.
The composition is dominated by a deep, saturated blue sky that contrasts with the warmer tones of the buildings and the bridge. Rather than focusing on precise topographical detail, the artist prioritises the emotional atmosphere of the city. The bridge, rendered in shades of ochre and orange, acts as a horizontal anchor against the verticality of the church spires and the shifting, fluid movement of the river below.
Kokoschka was known for his subjective approach to urban subjects. In this piece, the city appears as a living entity, shaped by the artist's rapid, energetic handling of the medium. The colour palette is deliberate, using complementary pairings to create a sense of visual tension. This work is characteristic of his period in Dresden, where he produced a series of city views that moved away from the rigid structures of earlier movements, opting instead for a more fluid, emotive representation of the urban environment. The result is a depiction that feels immediate and personal, reflecting the artist's engagement with the physical and psychological space of the city.

Dresden Neustadt - Oskar Kokoschka
Artist Biography
Oskar Kokoschka
He was born in 1886 in Pochlarn, Austria. He was shot through the head in Ukraine and bayoneted in the chest in Russia. He survived both.
After the war, he commissioned a Munich dollmaker named Hermine Moos to create a life-size replica of Alma, sending detailed instructions about the feel of her skin and the weight of her body. Moos covered the figure in feathers instead. Kokoschka eventually staged a public execution: he decapitated the doll and smashed a bottle of wine over its head on his lawn. The police arrived the next morning, thinking he had murdered a woman.
The Nazis declared him a degenerate artist. He fled Czechoslovakia for London after the Munich Agreement and became a British citizen in 1947. His Expressionist portraits are among the most psychologically penetrating of the twentieth century: raw, agitated surfaces that seem to expose the sitter's interior state. He lived to ninety-four.
