A detailed nineteenth-century engraving by Luigi Fabri, reproducing Raphael's Vatican fresco depicting the Donation of Rome.
This engraving by Luigi Fabri reproduces the composition of the Donation of Constantine, a work originally designed by Raphael and executed by his workshop in the Vatican Stanze. Fabri, an Italian engraver active in the early nineteenth century, demonstrates technical precision in his translation of the complex narrative scene into a monochrome medium. The print captures the architectural grandeur of the original fresco, utilising a system of fine lines and cross-hatching to define the depth of the vaulted interior and the varied textures of the figures' garments.
The scene depicts a formal ecclesiastical gathering, with the Pope seated upon a throne, receiving a kneeling figure. The composition is balanced, with groups of onlookers arranged in the foreground and middle ground to guide the eye toward the central interaction. Fabri maintains the clarity of the original Renaissance design, ensuring that the spatial relationships between the columns, the vaulted ceiling, and the assembled crowd remain legible. The inscription at the base, dedicated to Pope Pius VII, reflects the period's interest in the restoration and preservation of classical and Renaissance art.
As a reproduction print, this work serves as a record of the Vatican frescoes, which were highly regarded by artists and scholars during the Grand Tour era. The engraving process allows for the dissemination of Raphael's compositional principles to a wider audience. Fabri's work is characterised by a disciplined approach to light and shadow, which creates a sense of volume within the figures while respecting the flat, decorative nature of the original wall painting. The print is a fine example of the high-quality reproductive engraving tradition that flourished in Rome during the early nineteenth century, providing a detailed view of one of the most significant cycles of Western art history.
