A detailed etching by Félix Bracquemond, featuring a collection of natural motifs designed for the iconic Rousseau dinner service.
This etching is a plate from the celebrated Rousseau service, a dinnerware commission that represents a significant moment in the history of French decorative arts. Félix Bracquemond, a printmaker and designer, created these designs for the Parisian porcelain manufacturer François-Eugène Rousseau. The project is widely recognised for its early adoption of Japonisme, a movement that saw European artists incorporating the aesthetic principles of Japanese woodblock prints into their own work.
The composition displays a collection of disparate natural subjects: a rooster, a skate, various botanical specimens, and a pheasant. Bracquemond arranges these elements across the surface without a traditional horizon line or unified perspective. This approach mirrors the layout of Japanese pattern books, which often presented individual motifs for the artisan to select and adapt. The lines are precise and economical, reflecting the artist's technical mastery of the etching process. By isolating these subjects, Bracquemond allows the viewer to appreciate the specific textures of the feathers, the skeletal structure of the fish, and the delicate veins of the leaves.
Bracquemond was a central figure in the revival of etching in France during the nineteenth century. His work on the Rousseau service demonstrates his ability to bridge the gap between fine art printmaking and commercial design. The service itself became a sensation among the Parisian avant-garde, influencing the way artists approached the relationship between nature and domestic objects. This print offers a glimpse into the preparatory process behind one of the most influential dinner services of the era, capturing the artist's keen observation of the natural world through a lens heavily informed by Eastern artistic traditions.
