A moody, atmospheric etching by Théophile Steinlen depicting a nocturnal encounter between four figures in late nineteenth-century Paris.
Théophile Steinlen, a Swiss-born artist who became a fixture of the Montmartre art scene, possessed a keen eye for the social realities of late nineteenth-century Paris. In this etching, titled Deux Gigolettes et Deux Gigolos, he captures a quiet, shadowed encounter between four figures. The composition relies on the interplay of light and dark, using dense cross-hatching and aquatint to create a moody, atmospheric environment that feels distinctly nocturnal.
The figures, two women and two men, stand in a tight group, their forms emerging from the gloom. Steinlen avoids idealisation, choosing instead to document the characters of the Parisian demi-monde with directness. The title refers to the slang of the era, identifying the subjects as street-level figures, often associated with the nightlife and cabaret culture that Steinlen frequently depicted in his work. His technical approach to the etching medium allows for a range of textures, from the soft, indistinct edges of the clothing to the sharper, more defined lines of the facial features.
This print reflects the artist's broader interest in the lives of ordinary people, labourers, and those on the fringes of society. Rather than focusing on the glamour of the Belle Époque, Steinlen directs his attention toward the mundane interactions occurring in the city's darker corners. The work demonstrates his ability to convey narrative through posture and shadow, providing a glimpse into the social fabric of the period. The print is a fine example of his mastery of printmaking, where the economy of line and the depth of tone work together to establish a sense of place and character without the need for excessive detail or ornamentation.
