A haunting 1888 etching by William Strang depicting a personified figure of Death leading a child away from a grieving mother.
This etching by William Strang, titled Death and the Child, captures a sombre narrative scene rendered with technical precision. The composition features a personified figure of Death, depicted as a skeletal entity draped in a hooded shroud and carrying a scythe. This figure stands in a wooded area, holding the hand of a small child who reaches out toward a kneeling woman, presumably the mother. The mother is positioned in a posture of grief or prayer, her form echoing the quiet desperation of the encounter. A discarded barrel lies on the ground nearby, adding a sense of domestic abandonment to the rural setting.
Strang, a student of Alphonse Legros at the Slade School of Fine Art, was a significant figure in the British Etching Revival. His work often explored themes of mortality, folklore, and social realism. The etching technique here demonstrates his mastery of line and shadow, using cross-hatching to build depth and texture within the dark, wooded background. The contrast between the light-filled foreground and the encroaching shadows of the trees creates a sense of unease. The work reflects the late nineteenth-century interest in allegorical subjects, where the physical presence of Death is treated as a tangible reality within a mundane environment. The artist's initials, W.S., are visible in the lower left corner, and the date 1888 is inscribed in the lower right, placing this piece within the height of his career as a printmaker. The print offers a stark, monochromatic examination of human loss, avoiding sentimentality in favour of a direct, almost brutal depiction of the inevitable separation between parent and child.
