A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting a Dutch wheelwright at work, from the series Menselyk Bedryf.
This etching, titled De Wagenmaker, originates from the series Menselyk Bedryf (Human Occupations), a collection documenting various trades and crafts in the Netherlands during the late seventeenth century. The work depicts a wheelwright at his bench, engaged in the physical labour of constructing a wooden wheel. The composition focuses on the artisan, whose posture conveys the exertion required for the task. Beside him, a large wheel rests on the ground, providing a clear visual indicator of his profession. The background includes a modest rural structure and a distant tower, elements that ground the scene in a recognisable Dutch setting.
The print is accompanied by Dutch verse, a common feature in this series, which provides moral or philosophical commentary on the trade. The text reflects the cultural tendency of the period to find spiritual or societal meaning in everyday labour. The etching technique employs fine, controlled lines to define the textures of the wood, the artisan's clothing, and the surrounding environment. The shading is achieved through cross-hatching, which adds depth to the figure and the workshop area.
As a historical document, this print offers insight into the tools and methods of a seventeenth-century wheelwright. The inclusion of the verse elevates the image from a simple technical study to a piece of social commentary. The work is representative of the broader interest in documenting the diverse roles that sustained the Dutch economy and society during this era. The print is presented here as a high-quality reproduction, capturing the fine detail of the original etching plate.
