A detailed eighteenth-century Dutch etching depicting a blacksmith at his forge, accompanied by moralising verse regarding the value of industrious labour.
This etching, titled De Smit, is a representative example of the moralising genre scenes produced in the Netherlands during the early eighteenth century. Cornelis van der Sys captures a blacksmith at his forge, a subject that served as a common metaphor for the industrious nature of man. The composition focuses on the artisan at work, with the glowing embers of the furnace providing a dramatic light source that illuminates the interior of the workshop. The anvil, tongs, and hammer are rendered with precise detail, reflecting the artist's technical proficiency with the etching needle.
The print is part of a series titled Menselyk Bedryf, which translates to Human Occupations. These works were intended to provide both visual documentation of contemporary trades and didactic commentary on the virtues of labour. The Dutch text included below the image serves as a moral lesson, comparing the shaping of hot iron to the cultivation of one's own character. The verse suggests that just as iron must be worked while it glows, a person must apply themselves to self-improvement during the active years of their life.
Van der Sys employs a controlled, linear style typical of the period. The cross-hatching creates depth within the confined space of the smithy, while the figures remain grounded in their environment. The inclusion of the plate number and the series title indicates its original purpose as part of a larger collection of prints intended for educational or decorative use. This piece offers a glimpse into the daily life of a Dutch tradesman, presented through the lens of Enlightenment-era moral philosophy. The print remains a clear record of the intersection between artistic practice and social instruction in the Dutch Republic.
