A detailed eighteenth-century etching depicting a broom maker at work, from the series Menselyk Bedryf, accompanied by moralising Dutch verse.
This etching, titled De Bezemmaaker, originates from the series Menselyk Bedryf (Human Occupations), a collection documenting various trades and crafts in the Netherlands during the early eighteenth century. Cornelis van der Sys captures a domestic scene where a broom maker sits by an open doorway, focused on his task while a woman stands nearby holding a bundle of twigs. The composition uses the threshold of the workshop to connect the interior activity with the street scene visible outside, a common device in Dutch genre prints of the period.
The work is accompanied by didactic verses in Dutch, which provide a moralising interpretation of the trade. The text equates the physical act of sweeping with the spiritual cleansing of the soul, a reflection of the period's tendency to link daily labour with religious instruction. The etching technique employs fine cross-hatching to define the textures of the straw, the clothing of the figures, and the shadows within the room. The artist maintains a clear focus on the tools and materials of the trade, providing a historical record of the methods used by artisans in the Dutch Republic.
Van der Sys demonstrates a precise hand in the rendering of the figures and the architectural details of the doorway. The print serves as a window into the social and economic life of the era, where the dignity of manual work was frequently celebrated in print culture. The inclusion of the verse beneath the image transforms the scene from a simple observation of a craft into a broader commentary on virtue and industry. This print is a characteristic example of the pedagogical approach taken by Dutch artists who sought to document the diverse roles within their society through accessible, narrative-driven imagery.
