An early religious work by Hieronymus Bosch, featuring the crucifixion of Christ alongside the Virgin Mary, Saint John, Saint Peter, and a kneeling donor.
This work, attributed to Hieronymus Bosch, depicts the crucifixion of Christ with the Virgin Mary, Saint John the Evangelist, Saint Peter, and a kneeling donor. The composition follows the conventions of Early Netherlandish devotional art, where the figures are arranged in a foreground frieze against a distant, panoramic view of a city. The central figure of Christ on the cross is rendered with a focus on anatomical detail, reflecting the period's interest in the physical suffering of the subject. To the left, the Virgin Mary and Saint John stand in mourning, their heavy robes rendered with attention to shadow and volume. To the right, Saint Peter is identified by the keys he holds, while the donor kneels in prayer, his presence serving to connect the viewer to the sacred event.
The background features a rolling, green terrain that leads the eye toward a distant townscape, a common element in Bosch's early works. The sky transitions from a pale horizon to a soft blue, providing a neutral backdrop that allows the figures to remain the primary focus. The inclusion of scattered bones at the base of the cross serves as a memento mori, a reminder of mortality and the transient nature of human life. The painting demonstrates the artist's early mastery of oil techniques, particularly in the handling of fabric textures and the subtle modelling of the human form. While Bosch is better known for his later, more fantastical compositions, this piece provides insight into his early career and his adherence to traditional religious iconography. The work is currently held in the collection of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels.
