A refined ukiyo-e painting by Chōbunsai Eishi, depicting a courtesan in a moment of quiet contemplation with a letter held in her mouth.
Chōbunsai Eishi, a former official in the service of the Tokugawa shogunate, transitioned to the world of ukiyo-e printmaking during the late eighteenth century. This work, executed in ink and colour on silk, displays the characteristic elegance associated with his bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women). The subject is a high-ranking courtesan, depicted with the elongated proportions and refined features that define Eishi's mature style. She holds a letter between her lips, a gesture that introduces a narrative element of secrecy or anticipation to the composition.
The figure stands against a neutral background, allowing the focus to remain on the interplay of her layered garments. Her kimono features a complex pattern of red and white, contrasted by an outer robe in muted tones. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to delineate the folds of the fabric and the delicate strands of her elaborate hairstyle. The use of silk as a medium provides a subtle texture that complements the restrained colour palette, which relies on soft reds, browns, and creams rather than the saturated pigments found in mass-produced woodblock prints of the period.
Eishi was known for his departure from the more exaggerated styles of his contemporaries, preferring a sense of poise and aristocratic detachment. This painting captures that specific aesthetic, presenting the courtesan not merely as an object of desire, but as a figure of composed grace. The vertical orientation of the scroll format emphasises the height of the figure, creating a sense of balance and stillness. By focusing on the quiet moment of the letter, the artist invites the viewer to consider the private life behind the public persona of the Yoshiwara district. This piece remains a representative example of the sophisticated output produced by Eishi during his most active years as a professional artist.
