Descrizione
A classic example of Jean Arp's biomorphic abstraction, this relief explores the interplay of chance and form through simple, organic shapes.
Jean Arp, a central figure in the Dada movement, produced this relief during a period of experimentation with biomorphic forms. The work consists of irregular, organic shapes arranged within a shallow wooden frame. By employing a monochromatic palette of black and white, Arp removes the distraction of colour, forcing the viewer to focus on the relationship between the positive and negative space.
The title refers to the artist's interest in the role of chance in the creative process. Arp often allowed the placement of elements to be determined by gravity or random distribution, rejecting the rigid control typical of traditional composition. This approach reflects the Dadaist desire to bypass rational thought and tap into a more primal, intuitive method of making art. The physical depth of the relief adds a tactile quality, as the raised wooden elements cast subtle shadows against the background, creating a dynamic interaction between the object and the light in the room.
This piece is characteristic of Arp's work from the 1930s, where he moved away from the chaotic collages of his earlier career towards more refined, sculptural objects. The smooth, rounded edges of the forms suggest natural growth, such as pebbles or cellular structures, yet they remain resolutely abstract. By presenting these shapes in a stark, high-contrast format, Arp invites the viewer to consider the balance between order and disorder. The work does not represent a specific subject, but rather functions as a visual meditation on the nature of form itself. It remains a clear example of how the artist used simple materials to explore complex ideas about the randomness of the natural world and the human impulse to organise it.
