A serene coastal scene by Claude Monet, capturing the atmospheric light and chalk cliffs of the Normandy coast in 1881.
Claude Monet painted this coastal view during his stay in Fecamp in 1881. The work captures the dramatic chalk cliffs of the Normandy coast, a subject that occupied the artist throughout his career. Monet focuses on the atmospheric conditions of the English Channel, using a palette of soft blues, greens, and warm earth tones to render the interplay of light on the water and the rugged cliff face.
The composition is divided between the solid, textured mass of the cliff on the right and the expansive, calm sea on the left. Small sailing vessels are visible in the distance, providing a sense of scale against the vast horizon. Monet employs short, broken brushstrokes to convey the movement of the water and the shifting quality of the sky. This technique allows the colours to blend optically, creating a sense of luminosity that is characteristic of his work from this period.
Unlike his later, more abstract studies of the same region, this piece retains a clear sense of place. The artist balances the structural weight of the cliff with the ethereal quality of the mist and sea. The painting reflects his interest in capturing a specific moment in time, where the light transforms the physical reality of the coast into a study of colour and atmosphere. By observing the scene from a high vantage point, Monet creates a sense of distance that draws the viewer into the quiet, expansive nature of the Normandy shoreline.
