A delicate botanical study of chrysanthemums by Zhang Xiong, featuring fluid brushwork and traditional Chinese calligraphy.
This work by Zhang Xiong belongs to a series of twelve album leaves, a format favoured by artists of the Shanghai School during the Qing dynasty. Zhang Xiong was a prominent figure in this circle, known for his ability to combine traditional ink wash techniques with a refined approach to floral subjects. The composition focuses on the delicate structure of the chrysanthemums, rendered with a light touch that allows the paper to breathe.
The artist employs a calligraphic line quality to define the petals and leaves, balancing the organic forms with the structured verticality of the accompanying Chinese calligraphy. The palette remains restrained, utilising soft washes of colour that suggest the natural state of the plant without resorting to heavy saturation. This approach reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where the artist aimed to capture the spirit of the subject through economy of means and precise brushwork.
As a member of the Shanghai School, Zhang Xiong contributed to a shift in artistic production that catered to a growing urban merchant class. His work often features these balanced, elegant arrangements that were intended for private appreciation within an album. The inclusion of the artist's seal and poetic inscription provides a direct link to the tradition of the literati painter, where the integration of text and image forms a unified whole. This print captures the subtle tonal variations of the original ink and pigment, preserving the texture of the paper and the fluidity of the brush strokes. It is a representative example of nineteenth-century Chinese botanical art, demonstrating the technical proficiency and stylistic clarity that defined Zhang Xiong's career.
