A hand-coloured woodcut depicting the Ecce Homo, produced by the Dutch printer Doen Pietersz. in the early sixteenth century.
This hand-coloured woodcut by the Dutch printer and publisher Doen Pietersz. depicts the Ecce Homo, a traditional subject in Christian iconography. The scene captures the moment Pontius Pilate presents Christ to the crowd before his crucifixion. The composition is typical of early sixteenth-century Northern European book illustration, prioritising narrative clarity and symbolic detail over naturalistic perspective.
Christ stands elevated on a platform, wearing the crown of thorns and a robe, his body marked by the signs of his suffering. Beside him, Pilate is depicted in elaborate, contemporary attire, including a large turban and a fur-trimmed mantle, which reflects the tendency of artists from this period to dress biblical figures in the fashion of their own time. Below the platform, a soldier in armour gestures towards the scene, his posture suggesting the active role of the authorities in the unfolding drama. The background includes architectural elements and a bridge, rendered with the characteristic bold, graphic lines of the woodcut medium.
The application of colour, likely added by hand shortly after the printing process, provides a distinct visual character to the work. The palette is composed of primary and secondary hues, which serve to differentiate the figures and draw the eye to the central interaction between Christ and his accusers. As a product of the early printing press, this image demonstrates the role of woodcuts in disseminating religious narratives to a wider audience during the Reformation era. The work remains a clear example of the graphic style prevalent in the Low Countries during the early sixteenth century, where the marriage of text and image became a standard for devotional literature.
