A formal Baroque engraving by Samuel Blesendorf depicting Christina, Duchess of Schleswig-Holstein, framed by heraldic motifs and architectural elements.
This engraving by Samuel Blesendorf depicts Christina, Duchess of Schleswig-Holstein, presented within a formal oval frame. The composition follows the conventions of late seventeenth-century court portraiture, where the subject is elevated through heraldic symbols and architectural framing. Blesendorf, a Berlin-based engraver and goldsmith, demonstrates technical precision in the rendering of the Duchess, whose attire reflects the fashion of the period, including lace detailing and structured drapery.
The portrait is set against a backdrop of formal gardens, visible through the space behind the oval frame. Heavy curtains drape from the upper corners, adding a theatrical quality to the presentation. Below the portrait, a pedestal features the coat of arms of the Duchess, flanked by decorative carvings. The base includes an inscription detailing her titles and dates, a common feature in commemorative prints of the era intended for circulation among the nobility and court circles.
Blesendorf worked from a painting by the artist L. Wiand, as indicated by the inscription 'L. Wiand pinxit' in the lower left corner. The engraving captures the textures of the fabric, the softness of the skin, and the rigid geometry of the surrounding architectural elements. The work provides a clear example of the printmaking techniques employed to disseminate the likenesses of European royalty during the Baroque period. The monochromatic nature of the engraving focuses the viewer on the line work and the tonal variations achieved through cross-hatching and stippling. This print serves as a historical record of the Duchess, who was born in 1656 and died in 1698, the year often associated with the production of such memorial engravings.
