A sixteenth-century hand-coloured woodcut by Doen Pietersz. depicting the stripping of Christ, rendered with the bold lines and narrative focus of the Northern Renaissance.
This hand-coloured woodcut by the Dutch printer and publisher Doen Pietersz. depicts the moment Christ is stripped of his garments prior to the crucifixion. The composition follows the conventions of early sixteenth-century Northern European printmaking, where narrative clarity and theological focus take precedence over anatomical realism. The central figure of Christ, marked by the wounds of the flagellation, stands in a posture of resignation while soldiers surround him to remove his robe.
The print exhibits the characteristic bold, graphic line work typical of woodcuts from this period. The application of colour, likely added by hand shortly after the impression was pulled, provides a clear distinction between the figures and the background. The soldier on the left is rendered in bright orange and patterned attire, contrasting with the more sombre tones applied to the figures of Christ and the surrounding crowd. The presence of the cross on the ground serves as a visual anchor, directing the viewer toward the impending event.
Doen Pietersz. operated in Amsterdam during the early decades of the sixteenth century. His work often catered to a market interested in devotional imagery, which was common for private prayer books and small-scale religious publications. The woodcut medium allowed for the mass production of such images, making them accessible to a wider audience beyond the clergy. This specific impression retains the texture of the original paper and the slight irregularities of the hand-colouring process, which are common features of early modern printed ephemera. The work provides a window into the visual culture of the Low Countries during the Reformation era, reflecting the period's preoccupation with the Passion of Christ as a subject for personal meditation.
