A detailed 1607 engraving by Cornelis Galle the Elder depicting the biblical trial of Christ before the high priest Caiaphas.
This engraving by Cornelis Galle the Elder depicts the biblical scene of Christ standing before the high priest Caiaphas. Galle, a member of a prominent family of Antwerp engravers, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the period. The composition is structured around the central confrontation: Caiaphas stands on an elevated platform, gesturing with authority, while Christ is positioned to the right, surrounded by guards. The artist employs a dense system of cross-hatching to define the heavy folds of the robes and the architectural elements of the setting.
The scene is set at night, indicated by the starry sky and the presence of torches. Smoke rises from the torches, adding a sense of atmosphere to the urban environment. The background features a distant tower and a small, illuminated archway where a secondary fire burns, creating a sense of depth through light and shadow. The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions and expressive gestures typical of Northern Mannerist art. The attention to detail in the armour of the guards and the textures of the garments reflects the high standards of the Antwerp printmaking tradition.
Cornelis Galle the Elder spent time in Rome, where he absorbed the influence of Italian masters. This experience is visible in the dramatic staging and the clear organisation of the figures within the frame. The print serves as a record of the narrative focus common in early seventeenth-century devotional art. The work is marked with the date 1607, placing it within the artist's active period in Antwerp. The clarity of the lines and the controlled tonal range allow the viewer to focus on the emotional tension between the figures. This piece is a fine example of the technical skill required to produce narrative engravings for a wider audience during the Counter-Reformation era.
