A detailed etching by Henry Louis Basan depicting the biblical meeting of Christ and the Samaritan woman, executed in the style of Dutch Golden Age masters.
This etching by Henry Louis Basan depicts the biblical encounter between Christ and the Samaritan woman at Jacob's Well. The composition draws heavily upon the stylistic traditions of Dutch Golden Age printmaking, specifically referencing the works of Rembrandt van Rijn. Basan, a publisher and engraver, produced this work during a period when the reprinting and emulation of seventeenth-century masters were common practices in European print culture.
The scene is constructed with a focus on the interaction between the two primary figures. Christ is positioned on the left, leaning against the stone structure of the well, while the woman stands opposite him, holding a bucket. The background features a suggestion of a town and figures in the distance, rendered with fine, hatched lines that create a sense of atmospheric depth. The use of light and shadow, or chiaroscuro, is central to the visual narrative, directing the viewer's attention to the exchange occurring at the centre of the frame.
Basan's technique demonstrates a disciplined approach to line work. The cross-hatching and varied density of the strokes define the textures of the stone, the drapery of the garments, and the surrounding foliage. The arched top of the plate adds a classical framing element to the scene, consistent with the aesthetic conventions of the era. This print offers a clear example of the technical skill involved in nineteenth-century reproductive etching, where the goal was to capture the spirit and tonal range of earlier masters through precise manual labour on the copper plate. The work remains a study in the continuity of religious iconography within the history of European printmaking.
