A hand-coloured woodcut by Doen Pietersz. depicting the twelve-year-old Christ debating with scholars in the temple, dating to the early sixteenth century.
This hand-coloured woodcut depicts the biblical narrative of the twelve-year-old Christ engaging with the doctors in the temple. Attributed to the Dutch printer and woodcutter Doen Pietersz., the work originates from a series illustrating the life of Jesus. The composition follows the conventions of early sixteenth-century Northern European book illustration, where the figures are arranged in a compressed, architectural space to convey the interior of the temple.
Christ is positioned centrally, seated on a raised dais, which distinguishes him from the surrounding scholars. His posture is calm, contrasting with the varied gestures of the doctors who hold books and engage in debate. The artist employs a clear, linear style typical of woodblock printing from this period. The figures are defined by firm outlines, while the hand-applied colour adds a layer of visual interest to the garments and the brickwork of the background. The inclusion of the artist's monogram in the lower right corner provides a direct link to the production of the block.
Such prints were often produced for devotional texts, intended to assist the reader in visualising scripture. The aesthetic is functional and direct, prioritising the legibility of the narrative over naturalistic perspective. The use of bold, saturated colours—reds, blues, and greens—is characteristic of the hand-colouring techniques applied to popular prints of the era. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Dutch Renaissance, where the intersection of printing technology and religious instruction shaped the dissemination of imagery. The work remains a clear example of the graphic traditions that defined the early modern period in the Low Countries.
