A mid-nineteenth-century Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikazu depicting a man in Qing dynasty attire on horseback.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikazu belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the mid-nineteenth century as Japan began to open its ports to international trade. These prints provided the Japanese public with visual information about foreigners and their customs, often depicting individuals from various nations in a manner that combined observation with stylistic conventions of the Ukiyo-e tradition.
The composition presents a figure in traditional Qing dynasty attire, mounted upon a dark horse. The artist employs a flat, graphic approach, prioritising clear outlines and bold colour blocks over atmospheric perspective. The rider wears a peach-coloured jacket and blue trousers, with the characteristic queue hairstyle visible. The horse is rendered in a solid, dark tone, contrasting with the muted, aged paper background. The saddle cloth features a repeating wave pattern, a common decorative element in Japanese printmaking.
Utagawa Yoshikazu was a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and became a prolific producer of these foreign-themed prints. His work reflects the curiosity of the Edo period populace regarding the outside world. The text included in the print serves as a label, identifying the subject's origin. The print is characterised by its clean lines and the deliberate, almost diagrammatic, representation of the subject. It functions as a historical document of the cultural exchange occurring at the time, capturing a specific moment when global encounters were being translated into the visual language of the Japanese woodblock print. The print retains the aesthetic qualities of the period, including the specific colour palette and the balanced, static pose of the horse and rider.
