A 1885 watercolour by Winslow Homer depicting three children in Turkish-style dress, rendered with precise brushwork and a controlled colour palette.
This watercolour, dated 1885, depicts three children dressed in elaborate Turkish-style garments. The composition is arranged with a central female figure wearing a red veil and yellow dress, flanked by two companions in traditional attire. The figures sit before a large, potted palm, which provides a structural backdrop to the scene. Winslow Homer, known primarily for his American maritime subjects and rural life, produced this work during a period when he experimented with the medium of watercolour to capture light and texture with greater fluidity.
The artist employs a controlled palette, using washes of red, green, and ochre to define the clothing and the surrounding environment. The brushwork is precise, particularly in the rendering of the fabric folds and the decorative elements of the costumes. Unlike his later, more atmospheric Caribbean studies, this piece retains a focus on the figures and their specific, staged appearance. The inclusion of the palm plant suggests an interest in exoticism, a common theme in late nineteenth-century art, yet the execution remains grounded in Homer's characteristic observation of form and light.
This work demonstrates the artist's technical proficiency with watercolour, a medium he utilised to achieve both transparency and depth. The figures are positioned in a shallow space, with the palm leaves providing a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal arrangement of the seated children. The work is signed and dated in the lower right corner. It offers a glimpse into the artist's broader interests beyond his well-known coastal scenes, showing his ability to handle portraiture and costume with equal attention to detail. The muted tones and careful composition reflect the aesthetic sensibilities of the period, providing a clear example of Homer's versatility as a draughtsman and painter.
