A 1923 portrait by Roger de La Fresnaye, depicting the mythological twins Castor and Pollux through a lens of simplified, sculptural Cubism.
Roger de La Fresnaye painted Castor and Pollux in 1923, a period marked by his departure from the rigid geometric fragmentation of his earlier Cubist works. This piece reflects a shift towards a more classical, monumental approach to the human figure, while retaining the simplified, structural forms that defined his career. The composition focuses on the mythological twins, Castor and Pollux, presented with a sculptural quality that emphasises their physical presence.
The figures are rendered with clean, deliberate lines and a restricted colour palette. The artist uses shadow to define the facial features, creating a sense of volume that contrasts with the flatter, blue-toned background. The treatment of the skin tones, combined with the angularity of the noses and the simplified contours of the hands, demonstrates the artist's interest in the synthesis of modern abstraction and traditional portraiture. The interaction between the two figures is subtle, with one figure appearing to touch or gesture towards the other, suggesting a quiet, contemplative connection rather than an overt narrative action.
La Fresnaye was associated with the Section d'Or group, and his work often sought a balance between the analytical rigour of early twentieth-century modernism and a return to order. In this painting, the viewer observes a deliberate reduction of detail, which allows the viewer to focus on the interplay of light and form. The work avoids unnecessary ornamentation, relying instead on the strength of its composition and the clarity of its execution. It is a representative example of the artist's later output, where the influence of his health and the changing artistic climate in France led to a more introspective and refined aesthetic. The painting remains a clear demonstration of his ability to adapt his style while maintaining a consistent focus on the structural integrity of the subject.

Castor and Pollux - Roger de La Fresnaye
Artist Biography
Roger De La Fresnaye
He was born in Le Mans in 1885 into an aristocratic family with an ancestral chateau in Falaise. He studied at the Academie Julian, the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Ranson Academy under Maurice Denis, moving from Symbolism to Cubism around 1910. He joined the Section d'Or group in 1912, exhibiting alongside Duchamp, Gleizes and Metzinger at Jacques Villon's studio.
His Cubism was always temperate. He never fully embraced the radical fragmentation of Braque and Picasso, retaining naturalistic colour and recognisable forms that helped popularise the movement without terrifying bourgeois audiences. The restraint was both a strength and a limitation: it made his work accessible, but it meant that the avant-garde moved past him before the war intervened. His colour remained lyrical and warm where analytical Cubism was grey and cerebral. He came from aristocratic stock, painted with aristocratic moderation, and died too young to see whether the moderation would have held.
