A classic Barbizon School oil painting by Constant Troyon, depicting cattle at a watering hole under a dramatic, cloud-filled sky.
Constant Troyon, a central figure of the Barbizon School, produced this work during his mature period. The painting depicts a rural scene where cattle gather at a marl pit or shallow water source. A female figure in traditional peasant attire stands to the left, observing the animals as they cool themselves. The composition balances the solid forms of the livestock against the atmospheric treatment of the sky and the surrounding foliage.
Troyon began his career as a porcelain painter in Sèvres before transitioning to oil painting. His travels to the Netherlands in 1847 exposed him to the works of Paulus Potter and Aelbert Cuyp, which shifted his focus toward animal subjects. This influence is visible in the careful observation of the cattle, rendered with attention to their physical weight and texture. The sky, filled with heavy, grey-toned clouds, suggests an impending change in weather, a common motif in Barbizon painting that emphasises the connection between the animals and their environment.
The brushwork is controlled yet expressive, allowing for the depiction of light reflecting on the water and the varied textures of the animals' hides. Unlike the more idealised pastoral scenes of the previous century, this work captures the mundane reality of agricultural life in mid-nineteenth-century France. The palette remains grounded in natural earth tones, with ochres, browns, and muted greens dominating the composition. The inclusion of the human figure provides a sense of scale and narrative context, grounding the animals within a lived-in, working environment. This piece reflects the artist's ability to combine technical precision with a keen eye for the atmospheric conditions of the French countryside.
