A satirical etching by George Cruikshank from 1828, mocking the fashion for oversized bonnets through a series of humorous vignettes.
George Cruikshank, a prolific illustrator and caricaturist of the nineteenth century, produced this etching in 1828. The work captures the social anxieties surrounding the rapidly changing fashions of the Regency and early Victorian eras. Specifically, it mocks the trend for increasingly oversized bonnets, which became a common subject for satirical commentary during this period.
The composition is arranged as a series of vignettes, a format Cruikshank frequently employed to convey complex narratives within a single sheet. The central image depicts the construction of a massive bonnet, requiring ladders and multiple assistants to assemble. Surrounding this are various scenes illustrating the practical difficulties caused by such headwear. One vignette shows a woman struggling to pass through a gate, while another depicts a carriage modified to accommodate the height of the hats. The lower section includes puns and visual gags, such as the 'Bow Church Belles', where the bonnets themselves appear to be the primary subjects of the scene.
Cruikshank uses fine, precise lines to delineate the figures and the absurd proportions of the clothing. His approach is observational, focusing on the physical comedy inherent in the fashion of the day. The text included in the margins provides context for each scene, typical of the broadside and print culture of the time. By exaggerating the scale of the bonnets, the artist comments on the absurdity of following trends that impede daily movement and social interaction. This print offers a glimpse into the social history of London, documenting the intersection of fashion, class, and public behaviour. It remains a clear example of the satirical print tradition that flourished in Britain before the rise of mass-market illustrated periodicals.
