A serene coastal scene by Maximilien Luce, depicting horses grazing in a field near the Breton village of Kermouster.
Maximilien Luce, a painter associated with the Neo-Impressionist movement, produced this work during his later period. The scene depicts the coastal area of Kermouster, near Lézardrieux in Brittany. Luce frequently visited this region, finding inspiration in the specific light and the rural character of the Breton coast. His approach here moves away from the strict pointillist technique of his earlier years, favouring broader, more fluid brushwork that captures the atmosphere of the seaside environment.
The composition is divided into distinct zones. In the foreground, a stone wall encloses a grassy paddock where several horses graze. Two figures are positioned near the wall, providing a sense of scale to the open field. The middle ground features clusters of trees that break up the horizontal lines of the terrain. Beyond this, the sea stretches toward the horizon, with the silhouette of Bois Island visible in the distance. The sky is filled with soft, rounded clouds, typical of the coastal weather patterns Luce observed.
The colour palette relies on a balance of cool blues for the water and warm, sun-drenched yellows and greens for the fields. Luce uses these tones to define the depth of the scene, creating a sense of space that recedes from the immediate foreground to the distant shoreline. The light appears consistent, suggesting a clear day where the sun illuminates the textures of the stone wall and the coats of the horses. This work reflects the artist's interest in the quiet, everyday life of the French provinces, moving away from the industrial subjects he painted in his youth. It is a study of a specific location, rendered with an attention to the interplay between the natural features of the coast and the human elements present in the rural setting.
