A detailed seventeenth-century natural history study featuring six distinct beetle specimens rendered in watercolour and bodycolour.
Pieter Holsteijn the Younger was a Dutch artist known for his precise studies of flora and fauna. This work, Blad met zes kevers, displays six distinct beetle specimens arranged across a neutral background. The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century natural history illustration, where specimens were often grouped for study rather than depicted in a specific habitat. Each beetle is rendered with careful attention to anatomical detail, from the elongated antennae of the longhorn beetle to the iridescent wing cases of the smaller species.
Holsteijn utilises a combination of watercolour and bodycolour to achieve a sense of volume and texture. The application of paint allows for the subtle shifts in colour seen on the carapaces, ranging from deep, matte blacks to metallic greens and warm browns. Small letters are inscribed near each insect, likely corresponding to a now-lost catalogue or key that would have identified the species for the viewer. The artist maintains a clean, objective approach, focusing on the physical characteristics of the insects. The paper shows signs of age, with a warm, off-white tone that provides a soft contrast to the darker pigments of the beetles. This piece is representative of the scientific curiosity that defined the Dutch Golden Age, a period when artists and collectors sought to document the natural world with accuracy and clarity. The work remains a fine example of the intersection between artistic skill and biological observation, providing a glimpse into the methods used by early modern naturalists to record biodiversity.
