A refined woodblock print from Kōno Bairei's 1881 series, capturing a flock of cranes in flight with precise, naturalistic detail.
This woodblock print originates from the Bairei hyakuchō gafu, a collection published in 1881 by the Kyoto-based artist Kōno Bairei. Bairei was a prominent figure in the Maruyama-Shijo school, which favoured a naturalistic approach to the observation of nature. This specific plate captures a flock of cranes in flight, demonstrating the artist's ability to render movement and avian anatomy with economy of line.
The composition spans two panels, creating a sense of horizontal progression as the birds traverse the paper. Bairei employs a restrained palette, relying on subtle grey tones and the natural warmth of the paper to define the forms. The water below is suggested through simple, rhythmic horizontal lines, while the reeds in the foreground provide a sense of scale and environment. The birds are depicted in various stages of flight, from the distant, smaller figures on the left to the more detailed, foreground subjects on the right.
Kōno Bairei was instrumental in the development of modern Japanese art education in Kyoto. His work often sought to bridge traditional techniques with a more direct, observational style. The Bairei hyakuchō gafu remains one of his most recognised contributions to the genre of kacho-ga, or bird and flower painting. The print reflects the aesthetic values of the Meiji period, where the study of nature was both a scientific pursuit and a refined artistic practice. The clarity of the woodblock carving preserves the delicate brushwork of the original sketches, allowing the viewer to appreciate the precision of the artist's hand. This print offers a quiet, observational study of avian life, devoid of unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the grace of the birds in their natural habitat.
