A winter urban scene by Vincent van Gogh, depicting the rooftops and backyards of Antwerp in 1885 with a muted, atmospheric palette.
Painted during his brief stay in Antwerp in late 1885, this work captures a view from the window of his studio. Van Gogh arrived in the city after leaving Nuenen, seeking formal training at the Antwerp Academy. The composition focuses on the mundane reality of urban life, presenting a cluster of rooftops and backyards blanketed in a light layer of winter snow.
Van Gogh employs a muted palette dominated by earthy browns, greys, and ochres, which contrast with the pale, yellowish sky. The brushwork is deliberate, showing his transition away from the darker, more sombre tones of his earlier Dutch period toward the expressive application of paint that would define his later career. The perspective is slightly elevated, looking down into the cramped, enclosed spaces between the buildings.
This painting documents a specific moment in the artist's development. While he was frustrated by the rigid academic instruction at the academy, his time in Antwerp exposed him to the work of Peter Paul Rubens and the influence of Japanese woodblock prints. These encounters began to shift his approach to colour and composition. The scene is devoid of human figures, placing the emphasis entirely on the architectural forms and the atmospheric quality of the winter light. The chimneys, fences, and rooftops create a rhythmic, geometric structure that anchors the composition. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's daily environment during a period of professional and personal transition, capturing the quiet, often overlooked corners of a bustling city.
