Descrizione
A portrait of a young girl wearing a floral wreath, painted by William-Adolphe Bouguereau in 1875.
William-Adolphe Bouguereau, a prominent figure in the French Academic tradition, produced this work in 1875. The painting depicts a young girl seated upon a rock, positioned near a stream. Her posture is relaxed, with her arms crossed over her knees, and her bare feet rest near the water. She wears a simple white blouse and a dark skirt, adorned with a wreath of red flowers in her hair. The composition focuses on the figure, who gazes directly at the viewer with a steady expression.
Bouguereau utilised his characteristic smooth brushwork to render the textures of the fabric and the soft skin of the subject. The background consists of a shadowed, wooded area, which provides a contrast to the illuminated figure in the foreground. This technique directs attention to the girl, isolating her within the quiet, natural setting. The lighting is soft and diffused, typical of the artist's approach to portraiture during this period.
Throughout his career, Bouguereau maintained a strict adherence to the principles taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His work often features idealised figures, rendered with technical precision. This particular piece reflects his interest in pastoral themes, a common subject matter for him during the 1870s. The painting demonstrates his ability to balance anatomical accuracy with a polished, finished surface, a hallmark of the Academic style. By focusing on the girl's contemplative state, the artist creates a sense of stillness. The work remains a clear example of the technical standards expected of French painters in the late nineteenth century, prioritising clarity of form and careful composition over the more experimental approaches emerging in contemporary art circles at the time.

Artist Biography
William Adolphe Bouguereau
At the height of his career he was arguably the most commercially successful painter alive. His large-scale nudes, classical mythological scenes, and religious paintings were technically flawless in a way that impressed collectors and enraged the avant-garde in equal measure. The Impressionists despised him as the embodiment of everything academic painting did wrong: slick, idealised, emotionally vacant. After his death in 1905, the avant-garde buried his reputation for nearly a century.
Three of his children died in infancy. Their mother Nelly died in 1877. His mother made him swear, after Nelly's death, never to remarry while she lived. He honoured the oath. His engagement to his student Elizabeth Jane Gardner lasted seventeen years. They married in 1896, after his mother died at ninety-one. Gardner was herself a notable painter, the first American woman to exhibit at the Paris Salon. His reputation has undergone a reappraisal since the late twentieth century.
