A contemplative lithograph by Symbolist artist Odilon Redon, depicting Saint John the Apostle in a moment of quiet, visionary reflection.
This lithograph by Odilon Redon, titled 'And I John Saw These Things, and Heard Them' (C'est moi, Jean, qui ai vu et qui ai ouï ces choses), belongs to his 1899 portfolio titled 'L'Apocalypse de Saint Jean'. Redon, a central figure in the Symbolist movement, moved away from the objective representation of the natural world to explore the internal realms of dreams, memory, and the subconscious.
The image depicts the figure of Saint John the Apostle in profile. His head is bowed, and his hands are pressed together in a gesture of contemplation or prayer. Redon employs a delicate, cross-hatched technique that creates a soft, ethereal quality. The light appears to emanate from within the figure, casting subtle shadows that define the contours of his face and hair. The composition is quiet and introspective, focusing on the psychological state of the subject rather than a narrative depiction of the biblical text.
Redon's mastery of lithography allowed him to achieve a wide range of tonal values, from the deepest blacks to the most subtle greys. This print demonstrates his ability to manipulate light and shadow to evoke a sense of mystery. The figure is isolated against a plain background, which directs the viewer's attention to the expression of the saint. The work reflects Redon's interest in religious themes interpreted through a personal, visionary lens. It is a characteristic example of his later graphic work, where he moved towards a more refined and lyrical style. The print captures a moment of spiritual reception, conveying the weight of the visions described in the Book of Revelation through a restrained and meditative visual language.
