A detailed Flemish Baroque genre painting by Peeter Snijers, depicting figures engaged in harvest activities amidst a pastoral setting.
This composition by the Flemish painter Peeter Snijers presents a complex arrangement of figures and symbolic elements. Snijers, active in Antwerp during the early eighteenth century, was known for his ability to integrate still-life components into larger narrative scenes. The work features a central stone plinth adorned with a relief, topped by a sculpted lion. This architectural element acts as a divide between the figures engaged in agricultural tasks and the distant, rolling terrain.
To the left, a woman and a child are occupied with baskets of produce, including berries and greens, which suggest the bounty of the harvest. A man dressed in pilgrim-like attire, complete with scallop shells attached to his cloak, sits near the plinth, holding a gourd. On the right, a young woman stands holding a pitcher and a sheaf of wheat, further reinforcing the theme of seasonal labour and the fruits of the earth. The inclusion of potted carnations in the foreground adds a touch of domestic detail, common in the work of Flemish masters of this period.
The background reveals a wide, open vista with a river winding through the fields toward distant mountains. The sky is filled with soft, diffused light, typical of the period's approach to atmospheric perspective. Snijers demonstrates a precise handling of textures, from the woven baskets and the rough fabric of the peasants' clothing to the smooth, weathered surface of the stone plinth. The painting functions as an observation of rural life, filtered through the conventions of allegorical representation. It avoids the idealisation often found in later pastoral works, opting instead for a grounded, observational quality that captures the specific textures and activities of the era.
