A detailed Safavid-era Persian miniature depicting a scene of revelry and intoxication, rendered with gold leaf and fine brushwork.
This work is a characteristic example of the Safavid school of miniature painting, attributed to the master Sultan Muhammad. It depicts a complex scene of revelry and intoxication, set within a multi-level architectural structure that allows for simultaneous narrative actions. The composition is divided into distinct zones: the upper terrace features celestial figures, while the lower levels and the garden area are populated by figures in various states of disarray, sleep, and social interaction.
The artist employs a high-angle perspective, common in Persian manuscript illumination, which flattens the architectural space to prioritise decorative clarity. The colour palette is dominated by gold leaf, lapis lazuli blue, and soft pinks, applied with precision to define the garments and the tiled surfaces of the building. The figures are rendered with fine brushwork, capturing individual expressions and postures that convey the chaotic nature of the subject matter.
Sultan Muhammad was active in the royal workshops of Tabriz, and his work is noted for its imaginative approach to traditional themes. In this piece, the architectural elements serve as a frame for the human drama, with the verticality of the building contrasting with the horizontal spread of the figures in the foreground garden. The inclusion of calligraphic inscriptions within the cartouches at the top of the page integrates the text with the visual field, a hallmark of the manuscript tradition. This print captures the fine detail of the original, preserving the delicate line work and the specific pigment choices that define the Safavid aesthetic. The work provides a window into the courtly culture of the sixteenth century, where such allegorical scenes were produced for the enjoyment of the elite.
