An architectural elevation drawing of a temporary monument built for the 1795 Alliantiefeest in Amsterdam, rendered in ink and watercolour.
This architectural rendering depicts the temporary monument erected on the Botermarkt in Amsterdam for the Alliantiefeest, or Festival of the Alliance, held on 19 June 1795. The celebration marked the alliance between the Batavian Republic and the French Republic following the Batavian Revolution. The design reflects the Neoclassical aesthetic prevalent in late eighteenth-century Dutch civic architecture, characterised by a formal, symmetrical arrangement and the use of classical motifs.
The structure features a central pavilion flanked by two smaller, open-arched wings. The central section contains a painted panel showing allegorical figures surrounding a liberty pole, a common symbol of the revolutionary period. The architectural details, including the pointed arches and slender columns, suggest a stylistic nod to Gothic revivalism, which was occasionally employed in temporary festival structures to evoke a sense of historical continuity or national identity. The drawing includes a scale bar at the bottom, indicating its function as a technical plan for construction.
The use of watercolour provides a clear indication of the intended material finishes, with soft pinks, greys, and ochres defining the stone and brickwork. The composition is strictly frontal, typical of elevation drawings used by architects and master builders of the era. The inclusion of statues within the arched niches adds a layer of civic iconography, intended to communicate the political ideals of the new republic to the public. This print offers a precise view into the ephemeral nature of revolutionary celebrations, where temporary architecture was used to transform urban spaces into stages for political performance. The work remains a document of the visual culture surrounding the transition from the Dutch Republic to the Batavian Republic.
