A Flemish Baroque genre painting depicting the month of March through rural labour, seasonal produce, and the zodiac symbol of Aries.
Peeter Snijers, a Flemish painter active in Antwerp, produced this work as part of a series representing the months of the year. The composition depicts the month of March through the lens of rural life and seasonal labour. A young woman stands centrally, preparing fish, while a seated companion manages a basket of fruit and early spring flowers. To the left, a boy holds a ram, a clear reference to the zodiac sign Aries, which governs the period from late March to mid-April.
The setting is a village square, rendered with the muted, earthy tones characteristic of the period. The figures are dressed in practical, modest attire, reflecting the everyday reality of the time rather than an idealised vision of pastoral life. Snijers demonstrates a precise approach to texture, particularly in the depiction of the fish, the wool of the ram, and the woven baskets. The background features modest dwellings and a canal, providing a sense of place that grounds the allegorical elements in a tangible environment.
This painting belongs to a tradition of seasonal imagery that was popular in Northern European art. By combining human activity with symbolic markers of the calendar, Snijers creates a narrative that is both descriptive and structured. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the clarity of the figures and their interaction with the goods of the season. The lighting is soft and even, allowing the viewer to observe the details of the produce and the expressions of the subjects without distraction. It is a representative example of the genre painting that flourished in the Low Countries during the early eighteenth century, documenting the rhythms of the agricultural year through a balanced and observational lens.
