A 1914 Expressionist portrait by Oskar Kokoschka, depicting the poet Albert Ehrenstein in a contemplative, reclining posture with gestural brushwork.
This portrait of the Austrian poet Albert Ehrenstein, painted by Oskar Kokoschka in 1914, captures the subject in a state of physical and psychological repose. Kokoschka, a central figure in the Viennese Expressionist movement, employs a rapid, gestural brushwork that prioritises the emotional state of the sitter over precise anatomical rendering. The subject is depicted reclining with his hands clasped behind his head, a posture that suggests both vulnerability and a detached, contemplative mood.
The colour palette is dominated by muted earth tones, olive greens, and greys, which serve to ground the figure within a somber, ambiguous space. Kokoschka uses light to model the facial features, creating deep shadows that accentuate the hollows of the eyes and the tension in the jaw. The paint application is thick and tactile, with visible strokes that trace the contours of the clothing and the musculature of the arms. This technique creates a sense of movement and instability, reflecting the anxieties prevalent in the intellectual circles of pre-war Vienna.
Kokoschka often sought to reveal the inner life of his subjects through his portraiture. In this work, the gaze of Albert Ehrenstein is directed upward, away from the viewer, suggesting an internal focus or a preoccupation with abstract thought. The lack of a defined background environment forces the viewer to engage directly with the figure, whose elongated form and expressive posture convey a distinct sense of unease. This painting is representative of Kokoschka's approach to portraiture during his early career, where he moved away from the decorative tendencies of his contemporaries to focus on the raw, psychological reality of his subjects. The work remains a clear example of the artist's ability to translate complex human emotion into a visual language of distortion and colour.

Albert Ehrenstein - Oskar Kokoschka
Artist Biography
Oskar Kokoschka
He was born in 1886 in Pochlarn, Austria. He was shot through the head in Ukraine and bayoneted in the chest in Russia. He survived both.
After the war, he commissioned a Munich dollmaker named Hermine Moos to create a life-size replica of Alma, sending detailed instructions about the feel of her skin and the weight of her body. Moos covered the figure in feathers instead. Kokoschka eventually staged a public execution: he decapitated the doll and smashed a bottle of wine over its head on his lawn. The police arrived the next morning, thinking he had murdered a woman.
The Nazis declared him a degenerate artist. He fled Czechoslovakia for London after the Munich Agreement and became a British citizen in 1947. His Expressionist portraits are among the most psychologically penetrating of the twentieth century: raw, agitated surfaces that seem to expose the sitter's interior state. He lived to ninety-four.
