A detailed etching by Italian artist Santi Pacini, depicting the biblical Adoration of the Magi in a clear, linear Neoclassical style.
This etching by Santi Pacini depicts the biblical Adoration of the Magi. The composition follows traditional iconographic conventions, placing the Holy Family within a rustic architectural setting while the three kings and their retinue approach from the right. Pacini employs a clear, linear style characteristic of late eighteenth-century Italian printmaking. The figures are rendered with precise contours, and the use of monochromatic ink creates a sepia-toned effect that emphasises the graphic quality of the work.
The scene is populated with numerous figures, including attendants, horses, and a small dog in the foreground. The architectural elements, such as the stone archway, provide a sense of depth and structure to the narrative. Pacini, who was active in Florence, often produced prints after the works of other masters, and this piece reflects the disciplined approach to form and anatomy common in the period. The etching captures the movement of the procession, with the figures arranged to guide the viewer's eye toward the central group of the Virgin and Child.
As a fine art print, this work offers a clear view of the artist's technical skill in handling the etching needle. The lines are consistent and controlled, defining the drapery of the garments and the expressions of the participants without excessive shading. This print is a representative example of the religious subject matter that remained popular among collectors and scholars during the Enlightenment. The paper retains a warm, aged quality, which complements the sepia ink used in the original impression. It is a piece that invites close inspection of the individual figures and the overall spatial arrangement of the scene.
