A refined woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō, capturing the graceful movement of kabuki actor Nakamura Matsue in a traditional dance role.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicts the kabuki actor Nakamura Matsue in the role of a female dancer. Bunchō was a significant figure in the development of the yakusha-e (actor print) genre during the mid-Edo period. His work is recognised for its refined, slender figures and a departure from the more robust, exaggerated styles of his contemporaries.
The composition utilises the hosoban format, a narrow vertical sheet common for solo actor portraits. The figure is positioned against a stylised backdrop featuring a maple tree, which provides a seasonal context for the performance. The actor wears a kimono with a subtle pattern, and the pose suggests the fluid movement of a dance. The lines are delicate, reflecting the artist's focus on the grace of the performer rather than a realistic depiction of the individual. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft greens and earth tones, which is characteristic of the benizuri-e (rose-printed) technique used during this era. This method involved the use of two or three colour blocks, typically pink and green, applied to a monochrome base.
Bunchō often collaborated with other artists, most notably Katsukawa Shunshō, to produce works that captured the specific mannerisms and facial features of popular actors. This print provides a view into the aesthetic priorities of the eighteenth-century Japanese theatre world. The focus remains on the stylised elegance of the costume and the controlled posture of the dancer. By stripping away unnecessary detail, the artist directs the viewer to the essential lines of the performer's silhouette. This print is a representative example of the technical and stylistic conventions that defined the early period of actor portraiture in Japan.
